The Animal Identification Numbering Management System (AINM) is a Web-based program used to track the manufacture and issuance of Animal Identification Numbers (AINs) under the National Animal Identification System (NAIS). AINs are unique, 15-digit numbers assigned to identify animals individually to support State and Federal animal-disease monitoring and surveillance programs. AINs may also be used by industry for performance recording or breed registration or other programs they provide.

Distribution of AINs is currently available for several different devices including radio frequency identification (RFID) eartags and visual-only eartags for use in bison, cattle, deer, elk, goats, sheep, and swine, and RFID injectable transponders for use in alpacas, horses, and llamas.

AIN device manufacturers, managers, resellers and State and Federal animal health officials can access the AIN Management System through the USDA eAuthentication system, an identity verification system used to grant access to USDA online applications.

The National Animal Identification System (NAIS) is a national program intended to identify specific animals in the United States and record their movement over their lifespans. It is being developed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and State agencies ? in cooperation with industry ? to enable 48-hour traceback of the movements of any diseased or exposed animal. This will help ensure rapid disease containment and maximum protection of America?s animals.
