Located between the cities of Akron and Cleveland
in northeastern Ohio, Cuyahoga
Valley National Park was established in
1974 as a National Recreation Area. This was
part of an effort to protect both natural
and cultural resources within a region threatened
by increasing urban development. |

Not only does the region
possess diverse geological and ecological
assemblages associated with the riverine
environment, but it also contains vestiges
of a rich cultural heritage. Reflecting
the great progress made in preserving and
interpreting the unique resources of the
Cuyahoga Valley, Congress ultimately granted
it National Park status on October 11, 2000.
Numerous prehistoric and historic archeological
sites exist within the park, as well as
many standing structures and ruins of historical
significance. Among those sites, cultural
resources associated with the former Ohio
& Erie Canal perhaps hold the greatest
public interest. NEXT
