2006 First Place Image

First Place in 2006, consisting of a certificate and a $2,500 cash award, was won by a team of ten students of the School of Architecture & Environmental Design, Kent State University: Emily Anderson, Chris Blue, Bradley Kershaw, Matthew Kuzmik, James Pasquarelli, Aimee Pavlinich, Jessica Riley, Vincent Rosato, Jason Shymoniak, and Alan Tansey. The recording team was led by Professor Elizabeth Corbin Murphy, FAIA.

The students produced CAD-plotted Mylar drawings of THE CLEVELAND GRAYS ARMORY (1893) in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. This Richardsonian Romanesque structure, designed by Fenimore C. Bate, serves as the home of the Cleveland Grays, a volunteer militia established in 1837. The castellated structure and its towers exude an image of safety and protection. The Armory was the site of the first Cleveland Auto Show in 1903 and the first Cleveland Orchestra concert in 1918. The current drill hall was built in 1924 by the National Guard after the original burned in 1921. The Cleveland Grays Armory has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1973 and is a Cleveland Designated Landmark.

Second Place in 2006, consisting of a certificate and a $2,000 cash award, was won by a team of four students of the School of Architecture, Louisiana Tech University: Jerame P. Johnson, Yuliya A. Penny, Stephen M. Young, and Amy E. Zeringue. The recording team was led by Associate Professor Guy Carwile. Sponsorship was provided by the Louisiana State Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, Office of Cultural Development, Division of Historic Preservation.

The students produced CAD-plotted Mylar drawings of MELROSE PLANTATION, GHANA HOUSE located in Melrose, Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. This structure is a one-room cabin of piece-sur-piece, or log on log, construction with full dovetail joints at the corners. It has a broken-pitch hipped, wood shake roof and stone foundation with wood sills and floor joists. This cabin is an outbuilding on Melrose (Yucca) Plantation, a National Historic Landmark District since 1974. The plantation served as an artists’ and writers’ haven in the early twentieth century, hosting such personalities as William Faulkner and Francois Mignon.

Third Place in 2006, consisting of a certificate and a $1,500 cash award, was won by a student of the Department of Architecture, University of Oregon: Derek J. Metson. He was sponsored by Professor Howard Davis.

The student produced CAD-plotted Mylar drawings of SHELDON JACKSON COLLEGE, STEVENSON HALL (1911), located in Sitka, Baranof Island, Alaska. Designed by Ludlow and Peabody, a New York architecture firm, it served as the “small girls” dormitory for Sheldon Jackson School, the oldest educational institution in Alaska. The building is shingled on its first floor and covered with board-an-batten siding on its second, matching the other structures on the main campus. It now houses administrative offices for the college on the first floor and volunteers above. Sheldon Jackson College is a designated National Historic Landmark.
