FUSRAP Remediation in High Gear
Work continues at four remediation sites under control of the New
York District.
The four sites – in Maywood, Middlesex and Wayne, N.J., and Colonie,
N.Y. – are being cleaned up under the Formerly Utilized Sites Remedial
Action Program. The Corps assumed control of FUSRAP in October 1997
from the Department of Energy.
The program is designed to clean up low-level radioactive waste generated
during the early years of the nation’s atomic energy program. Congress
added the Colonie, Maywood and Wayne sites to the program because
the waste was similar to that of sites in FUSRAP. Contamination at
the sites consists mainly of low levels of uranium, radium and thorium
on building surfaces and in soil. Much of the contamination resulted
from processing ores to recover uranium and thorium during the 1940s,
1950s, and 1960s.
