SEATTLE—The Seattle-Tacoma International Airport Third Runway proposal will be the subject of public hearings Jan. 26 and 27, hosted jointly by the Seattle District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Washington Department of Ecology. The purpose of the hearings is to obtain information, public views and opinions on all of the issues to consider in making a permit decision on the proposal.
The Corps issued a revised public notice Dec. 27 for public comment regarding the Port of Seattle’s plan to fill 18.37 acres of wetlands and waters of the U.S. for constructing a third runway, two new runway safety areas and the South Aviation Support Area.
The public hearings are scheduled for Friday, Jan. 26, and Saturday, Jan. 27, at the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Center, 19010 1st Avenue South, Burien.
The hearing Jan. 26 is from 5:30-10 p.m. Prior to the hearing, from 4-5 p.m., Corps and Ecology staff will be available to answer questions from the public about the permitting process and procedures.
The hearing Jan. 27 is from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is preceded from 9-10 a.m. by a question and answer session regarding procedural issues.
The public notice comment period started Dec. 27, 2000, and ends Feb. 16, 2001. Comments will be made part of the public hearing record.
All factors relevant to the proposal will be considered, including environmental concerns, aesthetics, economics, fish and wildlife values, recreation, water supply, safety, water quality, historic properties, mineral needs, tribal treaty rights, considerations of property ownership and, in general, the needs and welfare of the people.
Comments received during the previous public hearings and comment periods are still part of the Corps’ and Ecology’s files and will be reviewed as part of the new notice.
