Draft Fremont Cut plan available for public review and comment, Open House Nov. 16

Draft Fremont Cut plan available for public review and comment, Open House Nov. 16 Contact: Patricia Graesser (206) 764-3760 Oct. 10, 2000 SEATTLE—A draft management plan for the historic Fremont Cut will be available for review beginning Oct. 16, according to the Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps has completed a draft plan for managing the colonnade of Lombardy poplars and associated vegetation lining the banks of the Fremont Cut. The draft will be available for public review and comment Oct. 16 through Nov. 14 at the Fremont Library, Queen Anne Library, Ballard Library, main branch Seattle Library and Chittenden Locks Administration Building. The Corps is requesting written comments on this draft to consider in its planning efforts. Additionally, the Corps will submit the plan to the Washington State Historic Preservation Office and National Marine Fisheries Service as part of the consultation process. The Corps has scheduled a question and answer session for community members Nov. 16, from 6-8 p.m., at the Locks. Those attending may ask questions of the Corps’ horticulturist, historical landscape architect and park manager. The meeting is at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks visitor center located at 3015 NW 54th Street in Seattle. The Corps operates the Lake Washington Ship Canal, including the Fremont and Montlake Cuts and the Chittenden Locks in Ballard. The Lake Washington Ship Canal Historic District is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and must be maintained according to federal preservation standards. The Corps’ objective in developing this plan is to restore the aging poplar colonnade in an historically appropriate manner and to replant shrubs and ground cover that has been lost over time. The goal is to develop a comprehensive, practical, and environmentally sensitive plan to guide the Corps’ management activities. 2-2-2 FREMONT Send comments to: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, 3015 NW 54th Street, Seattle, WA 98107-4299.
