Army Corps of Engineers and Seattle settle on firefighter training facility

CONTACT: Patricia Graesser (206) 764-3706, cell (206) 618-4324

SEATTLE--The Army Corps of Engineers and the City of Seattle reached an agreement Jan. 5 that will allow the City to complete construction of a firefighter training facility.

As part of the agreement, which was signed by Seattle District Engineer Col. Michael McCormick and Brenda Bauer, the City's Director of Fleets and Facilities, the City will mitigate the impacts to wetlands by creating and enhancing over 1 acre of wetlands at the training facility and over 2.4 acres of wetlands along an undeveloped section along the lower Duwamish River.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and National Marine Fisheries Service are reviewing a Biological Evaluation for the off-site mitigation to ensure that this work complies with the requirements of the Endangered Species Act. Once this step has been completed, the Corps can issue a permit, formally authorizing the work. This is expected to happen next month.
