SEATTLE--The master plan for the Albeni Falls Dam is the subject of three public workshops scheduled for May by the Army Corps of Engineers to discuss revisions and updates to project.
The workshops will be repeated on three nights in the Albeni Falls area. The first workshop will be Tuesday, May 17, at the Albeni Falls Dam Visitor Center in Oldtown, Idaho. The second will be Wednesday, May 18, at the Edgewater Hotel in Sandpoint, Idaho, and the third will be Thursday, May 19, at Newport High School in Newport, Wash. All workshops will begin at 7 p.m. and end by 9 p.m.
The master plan provides the overall direction for managing the 4,237 acres of upland and submerged land for which the Corps of Engineers has responsibility, according to study manager Phil Stoa. The existing master plan for the Albeni Falls Dam Project was prepared in 1981. The present effort is to update the Plan to reflect current conditions and particularly to present the goals and objectives that will guide use of the lands in the years to come.
Current and future usage is divided into five areas or management types: environmentally sensitive areas, recreation low-density, wildlife management, operations and recreation.
At the workshops, the Corps will present the various land management units and existing management goals, discuss future management goals, and gather comments. The Corps will use the comments in developing a draft master plan, which is expected to be available later in the summer, and which will be made available for review and comment by area Tribes, agencies, and the public. A final master plan is expected to be distributed in the fall of 2005.
