Heavy rains will test $3.7 million Snoqualmie flood control project

Heavy rains will test $3.7 million Snoqualmie flood control projectHeavy rains will test $3.7 million Snoqualmie flood control project FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Contact: Maria Or, (206) 764-6896 Andrea Takash, (206) 766-6447 Dec. 9, 2004 SEATTLE - Heavy rains tonight will test the $3.7 million Snoqualmie flood control project completed Sept. by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle District, city of Snoqualmie and King County. "We believe that this project will withstand any short-term flood we had anticipated in the original design," said Steve Rossignol, Corps senior construction representative who conducted quality assurance for the project. The city of Snoqualmie used to suffer from flood damage when river levels reached 40,000 cubic feet per second. Forecasts are uncertain if this weather front will reach that capacity, but if it does, the project team believes the flood event will measure the success of the project. The Snoqualmie 205 flood damage reduction project was a three-element plan, the project consisted of left and right bank channel widening 300 feet upstream of Snoqualmie Falls, and the removal of an abandoned railroad bridge, which is also upstream. Corps emergency management flood engineers stand by however to provide technical support to King County to help monitor surrounding areas and assess potential levy failures and debris blockage. ###
