Corps of Engineers to hold Grays Harbor navigation information meeting Aug. 17

Contact: Patricia Graesser (206) 764-3760 Aug. 2, 2004 SEATTLE--The Army Corps of Engineers will hold an information meeting about the Corps' long term management strategy study for the Grays Harbor navigation project at Aberdeen's Rotary Log Pavilion Tuesday, Aug. 17, from 4-6 p.m. The purpose of this study is to assess the threat to the federal navigation project of a breach between the south jetty and adjacent land mass and to recommend the most appropriate long-term strategy to maintain and protect the federal navigation project. The study focuses on the south jetty, Half Moon Bay, South Beach, Point Chehalis, and the navigation channel. The meeting will include a status report on the actions the Corps has taken since February's sand placement on the south jetty breach fill at Half Moon Bay, including dune grass planting; studies of ocean bottom dwellers, fish and shorebirds; engineering research on waves and tides; physical modeling of Grays Harbor south jetty and Half Moon Bay area; and recent dredging and material placement. The study team will share the Grays Harbor navigation long-term management strategy schedule and milestones, including opportunities for public involvement. The team will also discuss the interim action plan for the south jetty breach fill for fall/winter while the long-term strategy is being studied. The Rotary Log Pavilion is located at Morrison Riverfront Park, 1401 Sargent Blvd., in Aberdeen. More information is avaliable at: Grays Harbor LTMS
