Lake Pend Oreille going down to elevation 2,051 this winter

Lake Pend Oreille going down to elevation 2,051 this winterContact: Patricia Graesser (206) 764-3760 Oct. 1, 2003 SEATTLE--Lake Pend Oreille will fall to a winter level of 2,051 feet above sea level by mid-November, according to the Seattle District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps operates Albeni Falls Dam, which regulates the level of Lake Pend Oreille. This target winter elevation was determined in coordination with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Service recommendation is to draft Albeni Falls to a winter elevation of 2,051 feet. Lake Pend Oreille's winter level is managed in cooperation with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Idaho Fish and Game as part of an ongoing test of the effect of lake levels on kokanee populations. The test is currently scheduled to be completed by 2006. Kokanee serve as a major food source for Lake Pend Oreille's threatened bull trout. The Corps has been slowly lowering the lake about a foot a week since mid-September.
