Daily small lock closure at Chittenden Locks in Ballard Jan. 28-Feb. 7

SEATTLE--The small lock at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard will be closed from 7 a.m. until 4 p.m. each day Jan. 28 through Feb. 7, according to the Seattle District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which operates the Locks.
The large lock will remain open for boat traffic throughout this period. Boaters should be prepared to use the large lock with appropriate equipment and crew.
The daily closures during the next two weeks allow divers to prepare for a planned guard gate replacement project. An extended small lock closure is scheduled for Feb. 17 through April 25, when workers will replace the lock gates.
The scheduled work replaces the original guard gates, which were installed during the lock’s construction in the early 1910s. The $2 million project includes new gate construction by the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and preparation and installation work by S.L. Larson Construction Inc. of Lynnwood, Wash. Irish Foundry fabricated the castings associated with each set of gates.
