Restricted Area established at Naval Station Everett

Contact: Patricia Graesser (206) 764-3760 May 29, 2002 SEATTLE—The Army Corps of Engineers has established a restricted area surrounding Naval Station Everett, as requested by the Navy. Within the East Waterway the designation establishes a 300-foot restricted zone around moored vessels and the major piers of Naval Station Everett and lesser distances from other parts of the Station. The Navy asked the Army to establish the restricted area as required by Section 7 of the 1917 Rivers and Harbors Act. The decision to establish the restricted area, made by the Headquarters office of the Army Corps, in Washington, D.C., was published in the May 24, 2002, Federal Register. Seattle District Commander Col. Ralph Graves concurred with the Navy’s request, saying, “The events of September 11 and the attack on the USS Cole have demonstrated the need for immediate establishment of the restricted area surrounding Naval Station Everett.” The area is established temporarily as of May 29 and will become permanent June 23, 2002—30 days after publication in the Federal Register. All persons and vessels are prohibited from entering the restricted area without prior written permission from the commanding officer of Naval Station Everett; and fishing, mooring and recreational boating in the area will not be allowed without prior written permission. Naval Station Everett will enforce the restrictions. The exact latitude and longitude of the restricted area is available in the Public Notice under “Hot Issues.”
