Medical Ethics Short Course

Registration is now underway for the Medical Ethics Fall Short Course at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, 24-27 February 2009! This is a 4-day Course offering 28 hours of training in the critical areas of medical ethics.

Where? Delano Hall (Bld 11), MWR Conference Center, 2nd Floor
When? 24-27 February 2009 (Tuesday - Friday), 0730 - 1630 hours
Who? All Military & Civilian medical caregivers in MEDCOM
What? A 4-day Course examining the critical issues in military medical ethics.






 

 

 

Course Highlights: * Participants may attend any or all of the course for CME units (Physicians), CEU units (Social Workers), Contact Hours (Nurses), and a specified number of CEs (Psychologists). (Approved for AMA/PRA Cat. 1 Credit)

* The Medical Ethics Short Course covers the key issues in military medical ethics. The classes focus on the relevant, ethical dilemmas that today's military and DoD caregivers encounter in their day-to-day practice, and offers a framework and approach for understanding and resolving these critical ethical issues.

* A faculty of eleven subject matter experts from diverse professional backgrounds will present 22 classes on such topics as: the history of bioethics; applying bioethical principles in clinical practice; end-of-life decision-making; ethical issues on the battlefield; the ethics of humanitarian missions; ethical issues surrounding Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), physician-assisted suicide; determining decision-making capacity; confidentiality, privilege and truth-telling; ethics consultation; advanced medical directives; pain and palliative care; and nursing ethics.

* Special guest speakers, Dr. James F. Childress and Dr. Michael Gross will present classes on issues involving battlefield ethics on Thursday and Friday. Both men are recognized experts in the field of bioethics and have written and lectured extensively on bioethical issues.

Registration is on a first-come, first serve basis and there are 150 spaces available.
