Summit on Poverty

Assistant Secretary for Children and Families at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Wade F. Horn, Ph.D., spoke at a summit on poverty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Center for Poverty, Work and Opportunity.

The summit, entitled “New Frontiers in Poverty Research and Policy,” brought together public officials, policy experts and leading academics in the field of poverty research.

Dr. Horn discussed family formation, poverty and child well-being.

The event took place on Nov. 9, 2005 at the university’s Van Hecke-Wettach Hall.

In North Carolina, caseloads for individuals and families receiving welfare assistance continue to fall. The latest quarterly data, from January to March 2005, show a decline in caseloads from 71,718 to 65,919.
