Campanelli and ACYF Deputy Commissioner Frank Fuentes (right), present Pearlie Elloie of New Orleans Total Community Action, Inc. with an award recognizing support for Head Start children and families affected by Hurricane Katrina.

Also recognized with awards were the Regina Coeli Child Development Center of Louisiana, YWCA of Greater Baton Rouge, the Moore Community House Early Head Start of Biloxi, Mississippi, the Gulf Coast Community Services Association of Gulf Port, Mississippi and the Jackson County Civic Action Committee of Moss Point, Mississippi.

The celebration of Head Start’s 40th anniversary, “Honoring the Past, Strengthening the Future,” took place on November 30 at the Marriott Crystal Gateway in Crystal City, Virginia.

Program directors, federal staff and officials, Head Start parents, children and families and many others attended.

As part of the event, the Head Start Bureau welcomed copies of children’s work, including illustrations, stories, rhymes, art and other forms of expression of children’s ideas and Head Start experiences.

In his budget request for 2006, President Bush has requested $6.9 billion for Head Start programs nationwide. Head Start serves more than 900,000 children.
