Howard Hanson Dam UPDATE

A team of expert engineers and scientists from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reinspected Howard Hanson Dam today. The team concluded that the dam performed very well during the earthquake and that the dam is safe for continued operations. The fine cracks that were observed immediately after the recent seismic event are cosmetic in nature. Few dams are as highly instrumented as Howard Hanson Dam, and a more detailed understanding of how the dam responded to the earthquake will be very useful in furthering knowledge of embankment dams. The Corps will continue to use instrument and seismic data to conduct analyses and evaluations to further understand and publish the embankment responses in future reports
