SEATTLE--Colonel Michael McCormick assumed command July 27 of the Seattle District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

As district engineer, McCormick oversees military construction in Washington, Idaho, Montana and Oregon. He also manages an extensive civil works engineering and construction mission in Washington, Idaho and Montana.  His programs also include Historic Preservation of Historic Structures, and Hazardous, Toxic and Radioactive Waste cleanup. 

Prior to arriving in Seattle, McCormick attended the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, where he earned a master's degree in National Security and Strategic Studies.

Colonel McCormick's experience in command and staff positions spans over 23 years. Most recently, Colonel McCormick served as Chief of Plans, XVIII Airborne Corps Fort Bragg, North Carolina (deployed as Multi-National Corps - Iraq in Baghdad, Iraq).  Prior to that assignment, Col. McCormick served as Commander of the San Francisco District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Other key jobs have included Assistant Director, Civil Works Directorate, Headquarters, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Washington, DC; Executive Officer, Engineer Brigade 2d Infantry Division, Republic of Korea; Executive Officer, 307th Engineer Battalion and Chief of Plans, 82d Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, North Carolina; and Project Engineer, Omaha District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. 

Colonel McCormick's military education also includes the Engineer Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, the U.S. Army Ranger and Airborne Schools, the Command and General Staff College, the Advanced Military Studies Program, and the Naval War College. He is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh. His post-graduate education includes a master's degree in construction management from George Washington University and a master's degree in theater planning from the School of Advanced Military Studies, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

Colonel McCormick has been recognized for his significant contributions with a variety of awards, including the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with five oak leaf clusters, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Humanitarian Service Medal.  He is also a senior rated parachutist and a recipient of the Army Engineer Association's Bronze de Fleury Medal.

Colonel McCormick is a member of the Association of the United States Army and the Society of American Military Engineers.
