Fish ladder closed for cleaning at Chittenden Locks in Ballard May 27-June 6

Fish ladder closed for cleaning at Chittenden Locks in Ballard May 27-June 6Contact: Patricia Graesser (206) 764-3760 May 18, 2005 SEATTLE--The fish ladder at the Chittenden Locks in Ballard will be closed for cleaning May 27 until June 6. Most of the fish ladder plaza area and the ramp to the viewing room will be closed to the public. North-south traffic will be unaffected. The Army Corps of Engineers, which operates the locks, cleans the fish ladder every spring prior to the time when adult salmon begin migrating upstream to spawn. The fish ladder annually allows tens of thousands of salmon to migrate safely into the fresh water of Lakes Union and Washington. Last year approximately 403,000 sockeye, 10,000 Chinook and 27,000 coho adult salmon were counted in the fish ladder on their way upstream.
