Extended small lock closure at Chittenden Locks in Ballard Feb. 17-May 1

Contact: Patricia Graesser (206) 764-3760 Feb. 7, 2003 SEATTLE--The small lock at the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks in Ballard will be closed from Feb. 17 through May 1 to replace the lock gates, according to the Seattle District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which operates the Locks. The large lock will remain open for boat traffic throughout this period. Boaters should be prepared to use the large lock with appropriate equipment and crew. The scheduled work replaces the original guard gates, which were installed during the lock's construction in the early 1910s. The $2 million project includes new gate construction by the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and preparation and installation work by S.L. Larson Construction Inc. of Lynnwood, Wash. Irish Foundry fabricated the castings associated with each set of gates.
