Cascadia Regional Earthquake Readiness Workshop

Contact Preceding Conference - Leslie Kaye, Direct Line: 206-764-3751 Cell: 206-369-8937 Contact During Conference – Paul Johnston, Chief NWD Public Affairs Cell: 402-305-3821 July 12, 2002 The Army Corps of Engineers is conducting a regional readiness workshop to exercise the federal, state and local preparedness planning for a catastrophic earthquake in the Pacific Northwest. More than 150 federal, state and local experts from the Corps, Federal Emergency Management Agency, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana and British Columbia will participate. When: July 16-18, beginning at 8 a.m. each day Where: Hilton Seattle Airport & Conference Center, 17620 Pacific Highway South What: The objectives of the workshop are: · Consider all hazards and threats posed by a catastrophic earthquake, including triggering of coast tsunami waves as well as other seismic actions, earthquake and volcanic events that are unique to the Pacific Northwest. · Enhance regional teamwork and provide insights for planning and preparedness efforts of regional response partners. · Examine and discuss state and local plans to anticipate requirements that could lead to requests for federal assistance. · Investigate how to make the best use of computer modeling to facilitate rapid decision-making. · Emphasize preparedness to provide federal response, including statutory authorities relating to water control and supply as well as structural safety of dams and flood control works. Media representatives are invited to observe the activities. Workshop leaders will be available for interviews during conference breaks. A press conference is not scheduled.
