Partnering to Fight HIV/AIDS
CDC began supporting HIV surveillance in Vietnam in 1999, and in October 2001, the CDC Global AIDS Program (GAP) Vietnam office was established. In support of the Vietnam Ministry of Health, CDC focuses its efforts on the highest-prevalence provinces and supports programming addressing most-at-risk populations (MARP)-- injection drug users, commercial sex workers, and men who have sex with men--where the majority of transmissions occur.

In 2003, US President George W. Bush announced the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Vietnam was designated a focus country of the initiative and the CDC GAP Vietnam became a part of this unified US Government effort to turn the tide against the epidemic.
