Partnering to Fight HIV/AIDS
Since 2001, CDC Global AIDS Program (GAP) Thailand office has been supporting
the Thailand Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) and the Bangkok Metropolitan
Administration. For the first several years, this support focused on building
the infrastructure and developing human capacity needed to strengthen programs
for surveillance, prevention, and treatment of HIV and related diseases. Working
with MOPH, CDC has helped identify priority issues, develop and evaluate model
programs, and incorporate those programs into routine government systems.
Recently, CDC's focus has turned to integration and scale-up of the most
successful models, along with continued model development in high priority areas
such as prevention among most-at-risk populations.
In 2003, US President George W. Bush announced the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and CDC GAP Thailand became a part of this unified US Government effort to turn the tide against the epidemic.
