Partnering to Fight HIV/AIDS
The CDC Global AIDS Program (GAP) South Africa office was launched in June 2000.
Since then CDC has been supporting the Ministry of Health through activities
focusing on preventing transmission of HIV/AIDS, treatment and care of those who
are already infected with HIV, and increasing laboratory capacity.
In 2003, US President George W. Bush announced the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). South Africa was designated a focus country of the initiative and the CDC South Africa became a part of this unified US Government effort to turn the tide against the epidemic.
