Partnering to Fight HIV/AIDS

The CDC Global AIDS Program (GAP) Rwanda office opened in 2002. Since then, CDC has been supporting the Government of Rwanda in the areas of blood safety, counseling and testing, prevention of mother to child HIV transmission, basic community- and home-based palliative care, tuberculosis/HIV integration, antiretroviral treatment and adherence, as well as laboratory and human capacity building. CDC also provides technical and financial assistance to the Ministry of Health on the development HIV services guidelines and HIV prevention services through its health school project.

In 2003, US President George W. Bush announced the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and CDC GAP Rwanda became a part of this unified US Government effort to turn the tide against the epidemic.
