Partnering to Fight HIV/AIDS
The CDC Global AIDS Program (GAP) Kenya was launched in March 2000. Since then,
CDC has supported, in collaboration with many US Government agencies and the
government of Kenya, counseling and testing, prevention of mother to child
transmission, and abstinence and be faithful prevention programs. CDC supports
blood and injection safety, comprehensive HIV prevention and care programs for
the military, antiretroviral treatment (ART), palliative care, and TB/HIV
activities. In addition, CDC provides critical support to build the laboratory
capacity to support these programs.
In 2003, US President George W. Bush announced the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Kenya was designated a focus country of the initiative and the CDC GAP Kenya became a part of this unified US Government effort to turn the tide against the epidemic.
