The CDC Global AIDS Program (GAP) Ethiopia office was launched in April 2001.
CDC's mission there is support the Ethiopian Ministry of Health in reducing the
incidence of HIV by supporting integrated prevention, treatment, care and
support interventions, and by building capacity of indigenous organizations to
enable them to manage and deliver services relevant to effective prevention and
control of the HIV epidemic in the country. CDC provides extensive technical
expertise in Ethiopia in the areas of blood safety, antiretroviral (ARV)
services, laboratory infrastructure, and strategic information.
In 2003, US President George W. Bush announced the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). Ethiopia was designated a focus country of the initiative and CDC GAP Ethiopia became a part of this unified US Government effort to turn the tide against the epidemic.
