CDC has been working in Cote d'Ivoire since 1988, and in 2001 the CDC opened its
Global AIDS Program (GAP) office. CDC supports the Government of Cote d'Ivoire,
as well as international, community-, and faith-based organizations, to support:
voluntary counseling and testing, prevention of mother to child transmission,
abstinence and be faithful programs, blood and injection safety, antiretroviral
treatment, palliative care, TB/HIV activities, and building laboratory capacity.
In 2003, US President George W. Bush announced the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and Cote d'Ivoire was designated a focus country of the initiative and CDC GAP Cote d'Ivoire became a part of this unified US Government effort to turn the tide against the epidemic.
