Yazoo Backwater Reformulation Project
Environmental Concerns: The Vicksburg District protects environmental resources within the Project Area. Below is a summary of how the Recommended Plan will affect the environment.
Pondberry:
• Established a 7–year cooperative research program with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service to help conserve and recover pondberry. • Signed a Memorandum of Agreement with USFWS to establish two new pondberry populations in the project area. • The Yazoo Backwater Project provides potential habitat for the pondberry by the reforestation of up to 55,600 acres.
The USFWS concluded in its Biological Opinion that the project was likely to affect the pondberry, but that the project would not jeopardize its continued existence.
Louisiana Black Bear · Reforestation of up to 55,600 acres of agricultural lands will provide additional habitat for the Louisiana Black Bear
The USFWS concurs with the Vicksburg District’s determination that the project is not likely to adversely affect the Louisiana black bear.
• Increases standing stock and production of many fish species. • Restores crucial 1-year fish spawning and rearing habitat. • Expands crucial habitat for Louisiana black bear and pondberry. • Restores critical waterfowl, neotropical birds, and migratory shore bird habitat. • Provides increased organic matter for aquatic organisms. • Reduces sediment improves water quality. • Increases wetlands resources by 19%. • Increases terrestrial habitat by 11%. • Increases waterfowl foraging values by 53%. • Increases aquatic spawning values by 30%. • Increases aquatic rearing values by 8%
