Subject Index Searches

What It Does

The subject index search compares search words or phrases to an index of official Library of Congress subject headings. Some items in a list of subject headings are marked with an icon labeled "more Info" that provides information cclarifying usage and suggesting other Library of Congress headings associated with a particular subject.

When To Use It

Use this search when you know the exact words or phrases.

Examples

To browse Alexander the Great, 356-323 B.C.
Enter alexander the great
To browse for books about Eugene O'Neill
Enter oneill eugene
To browse for books on cooking beans
Enter cookery beans

Tips

Omit all punctuation.

When omitting an apostrophe, close the space. For example, enter oneill eugene, not o'neill or o neill.

Boolean Search

Truncation

Searches are automatically truncated and retrieve catalog records that begin with the words or phrases you enter. Entering bank will automatically retrieve bank, banker, banking, bankhead, banks, etc. Do not use the question mark (?) for truncation.

In search results, most headings will link directly to catalog records. Headings marked with the MORE INFO icon link to a separate page that provides more information, including links to headings that reflect the official Library of Congress Subject Headings.
