Project Synopsis16-Feb-2005 -- Project Description PROMIS Comment Number 4The Navajo Nation is the largest in the US, encompassing 26,000 square miles of high desert and mountains in 3 states (AZ, NM, UT) The San Juan and Little Colorado River drainage basins are 2 major watersheds draining the reservation lands into the Colorado River in northern AZ. River channels within these drainage basins are dry throughout the year, except during summer / winter rains. During these events, floods cause damage to homes, industries & public facilities essential to the survival of local communities. In addition, extensive erosion accompanies these catastrophic events with floodwaters diminishing agricultural/range lands and damaging public utilities. Flash floods from 1964 - 1984 have attributed to 15 deaths. This study will assess regional Flood Plain Management, previous flood damage, and evaluate structural and non-structural measures for reducing flood damages in the region.
