CORPS SEEKS PUBLIC COMMENTS ON NEWHALL RANCH PROJECT

Los Angeles – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Los Angeles District, in partnership with the California Department of Fish and Game, will host a public meeting in Castaic on February 19, 2004 to accept comments on possible environmental concerns and other issues of public interest for the proposed Newhall Ranch project along the Santa Clara River near Santa Clarita.  The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Castaic Middle School, 28900 Hillcrest Parkway.

The proposed project encompasses approximately 12,000 acres in northern Los Angeles County along the Santa Clara River and State Route 126.  It includes development of residential, commercial, industrial, mixed use and open space areas requiring work in and around portions of the river and its side drainages.

The Corps will present the Notice of Intent to Prepare a Draft Environmental Impact Statement/Environmental Impact Report (DEIS/EIR) for the proposed project and will seek additional information and other evidence to consider in evaluating the Section 404 (Clean Water Act of 1972) permit application for the project.  The Corps uses public comments to assess impacts on endangered species, historic properties, water quality, general environmental effects and other public interest factors.  These factors include conservation, economics and, in general, the needs and welfare of the people.

During the meeting, members of the public may provide comments on the scope of the planned DEIS/EIR verbally or in writing.  Written comments will be accepted through March 5, 2004 submitted electronically to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or by mail to:
