CORPS SEEKS PUBLIC COMMENTS ON MATILIJA DAM STUDY Los Angeles – The United States Army Corps of Engineers (Corps), Los Angeles District, in partnership with the Ventura County Watershed Protection District, will hold a Public Meeting for the Matilija Dam Ecosystem Restoration Feasibility Study on July 28th, 2004, 6:30 p.m., at the Ventura County Government Center, Hall of Administration, in the Board of Supervisors Hearing Room, located at 800 South Victoria Ave., Ventura, California. The purpose of this meeting is to present the Matilija Dam Ecosystem Restoration Feasibility Study, which proposes to remove Matilija Dam and the accumulated sediment behind the dam. Removal of Matilija Dam would eliminate a barrier to fish passage on Matilija Creek and facilitate the migration, spawning, and rearing of endangered southern steelhead. Accumulated sediment would be removed or re-configured to improve the Matilija Creek flow regime and ultimately restore Matilija Creek and the Ventura River to a more natural streambed configuration, while bringing much needed sand to Ventura County beaches. The public, as well as Federal, State, and local agencies are encouraged to actively participate in the process by attending the meeting. For all interested parties, a CD version of the document is available for pick-up at the Ventura County Watershed Protection District, 800 South Victoria Avenue, Ventura, California. The Report is also available on the Project’s website at www.matilijadam.org. For additional information, contact the Corps’ Public Affairs Office at 213-452-3333. |
