CORPS OF ENGINEERS TO CONDUCT A TOWN HALL MEETING ON THE CAMP NAVAJO WHERRY HOUSING RELOCATION PROJECT

Bellemont, Ariz. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will conduct a town hall meeting to inform Camp Navajo Wherry Housing tenants about their entitlements to relocation assistance and benefits under the terms of Public Law 91-646.   Corps relocation and realty specialists will be available to answer questions or address concerns at the meeting on Monday, November 29th, at 7:00 p.m. at the Camp Navajo Dining Facility.

In January 2004, the Department of the Army's Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management (ACSIM) issued a directive for the disposal of the sixty-nine Wherry Housing Units at Camp Navajo as soon as possible.

The units were constructed in the mid-1950's to house active-duty U.S. military personnel and their families on the military installation.  Today, Camp Navajo is operated by the Arizona National Guard as a National Guard training site and storage depot.  National Guard soldiers and civilians occupy 84% of the houses.  As the mission and status of Camp Navajo evolved over the years though, the need to house active-duty personnel dwindled and ultimately disappeared.

The housing will be demolished and the vacant land subject to use by the National Guard after all tenants have been relocated.

For additional information on the Camp Navajo Relocation Project, visit our website at www.spl.usace.army.mil.  For information on the upcoming meeting, contact the Public Affairs Office at 213-452-3908.
