CORPS OF ENGINEERS TO CONDUCT A TOWN HALL MEETING ON THE CAMP NAVAJO WHERRY HOUSING RELOCATION PROJECT Bellemont, Ariz. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) will conduct a town hall meeting to inform Camp Navajo Wherry Housing tenants about their entitlements to relocation assistance and benefits under the terms of Public Law 91-646. Corps relocation and realty specialists will be available to answer questions or address concerns at the meeting on Monday, November 29th, at 7:00 p.m. at the Camp Navajo Dining Facility. In January 2004, the Department of the Army's Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management (ACSIM) issued a directive for the disposal of the sixty-nine Wherry Housing Units at Camp Navajo as soon as possible. The units were constructed in the mid-1950's to house active-duty U.S. military personnel and their families on the military installation. Today, Camp Navajo is operated by the Arizona National Guard as a National Guard training site and storage depot. National Guard soldiers and civilians occupy 84% of the houses. As the mission and status of Camp Navajo evolved over the years though, the need to house active-duty personnel dwindled and ultimately disappeared. The housing will be demolished and the vacant land subject to use by the National Guard after all tenants have been relocated.
