CORPS AWARDS CONTRACT TO REPAIR SAN LUIS BREAKWATER
LOS ANGELES—Connolly Pacific Co. has begun work to repair the Port San Luis Harbor breakwater damaged in the Dec. 22, 2003 San Simeon earthquake. The Los Angeles District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awarded the company a $681,250 contract to make repairs to the head of the breakwater.
Corps navigation project manager Keith Ayers estimated the repairs will require 2,000 metric tons of rock brought in from Connolly Pacific’s quarry on Catalina Island. “Connolly Pacific will use its 255-foot long derrick barge, the Long Beach, to place each of the 16-ton rocks,” he said.
Ayers expects crews will work about 12 hours per day and will complete the job in approximately 10 days. “The repairs will prevent further unraveling of the 50-foot section of the stone rubble breakwater and ensure it continues to protect moored boats in the harbor from destructive wave action,” he added.
Under various federal laws, the Corps awards contracts on a regular basis for work related to its many projects. Interested parties can learn more about Los Angeles District contracting at https://ebs.spl.usace.army.mil/. |
