North Atlantic Regional Medical Command


Colonel Steven Jones is a twenty-six year Army veteran. In 1981, he received a commission in the Medical Service Corps through the ROTC program at the University of Richmond. His military occupational specialty is environmental science and preventive medicine (AOC 72D).

He has served in a variety of field, garrison, DA staff, and command positions. He first served as the Environmental Science Officer for the 3rd Infantry Division, then the 82nd Airborne Division from 1981-1988. From 1988-1991, he commanded the 71st Medical Detachment (Preventive Medicine), located in Grafenwoehr, Germany, to include deploying the unit in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm. He returned to Fort Bragg, NC, and served as the XVIII Airborne Corps Environmental Science Officer, Office of the Corps Surgeon from 1991-1993. Following Command and General Staff College, he returned to Germany as the Chief, Environmental Health Engineering Division, U.S. Army Center for Health Promotion and Preventive Medicine Europe (USACHPPMEUR) from 1994-1997. He then served as the Chief of Environmental Compliance, Office of the Director of Environmental Programs, HQDA, from 1997-1999. He returned to USACHPM to command USACHPPM-North at Fort Meade, MD, from 1999-2001, focusing the unit on direct support of deployable units and power projection platforms within the North Atlantic Regional Medical Command and XVIII Airborne Corps.

Following a one-year Pentagon assignment with the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Environment, Safety, and Occupational Health, Colonel Jones attended the National War College at Fort McNair, Virginia. He then served as the Director of the Military Vaccine Agency, Office of the Army Surgeon General, from 2003-2005. In this capacity, he managed the Department of Defense bio-defense vaccination programs in support of ongoing Global War on Terrorism operations. He commanded USACHPPMEUR, Landstuhl, Germany, from 2005–2007. He is currently assigned as the Chief of Staff, North Atlantic Regional Medical Command, located at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, D.C.

Colonel Jones’ professional military education includes the Army Medical Department Basic Officer Course, Advanced Officer Course, and Principles of Military Preventive Medicine Course. He is a graduate of the Command and General Staff College, and the National War College. His civilian education includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Virginia; a Masters in Public Health from Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana; and a Masters of Science in National Security Strategy from the National Defense University, Washington, DC. He holds the Master Parachutist, Air Assault, Expert Field Medical Badge, and several service awards and ribbons.

Colonel Jones is married to the former Margaret Ann Bultman, his childhood sweetheart. They have two lovely children, Eric and Ashley Jones, both currently attending college in Virginia.

His daily motivating question to himself and all near him is “What have you done for the Soldiers today?”
