Cold Regions Lab Scientist Earns Dartmouth Award

Taylor photoA research physical scientist with the Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) was recently awarded a Dartmouth College Women In Science Program (WISP) award.

Dr. Susan Taylor, with CRREL's Environmental Sciences Branch, was presented a WISP award for her support of undergraduate education through research advising and mentoring. She received the award at the College's Karen E. Wetterhahn Science Symposium in May.

The Karen E. Wetterhahn Science Symposium is named in memory of Karen E. Wetterhahn, a Dartmouth College Professor of Chemistry, who co-founded WISP in 1990 when she was the Associate Dean for the Sciences. The mission of WISP is to encourage more women to choose science, math, and engineering as a major or a career by creating and fostering a supportive academic and social climate for women studying science.

"I have had good experiences mentoring WISP students. They have been smart, hard workers and I have learned a lot from them. As a researcher, mentoring is a way for me to interact with young people interested in science and it's really a lot of fun," said Taylor. Since 1994 Taylor has mentored seven students.

Taylor's current research efforts are in the fields of geochemistry and cosmochemistry. She has been a member of the laboratory technical team for 16 years.

Taylor is a resident of Lebanon, N.H.

CRREL is one of seven laboratories that comprise the Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC). The ERDC is the premier research and development facility for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with more than 2,000 employees, $1.2 billion in facilities, and an annual research program exceeding $570 million. It conducts research in both military and civil works mission areas for the Department of Defense and the nation.

CRREL is the only Department of Defense laboratory addressing problems and opportunities unique to the world's cold regions. Located in Hanover, N.H., CRREL also has field offices in Fairbanks and Anchorage, Alaska.
