Lotufo honored with two HENAAC awards

Dr. Guilherme Lotufo25 Aug 05-- Vicksburg, MS -- Dr. Guilherme Lotufo, a research biologist in the Environmental Laboratory at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC) in Vicksburg, Miss., was recently named HENAAC's, "Role Model of the Week," and chosen as a HENAAC Luminary Honoree.

HENAAC's goal is to enlighten the nation about the achievements of Hispanics in engineering, science, technology and math.

Lotufo will receive his award at the organization's 17th annual conference in Anaheim, Calif., in October.

Lotufo has been the lead investigator for projects involving sediment toxicology, fate and effects of hydrophobic organic or explosive compounds in aquatic environments and ecological and human health-risk assessment approaches for hazardous waste contamination.

Information from Lotufo's research is being used in environmental and risk assessments of contaminated sites. He is co-editing the book, "Ecotoxicoloy of Explosive," which is to be published in 2006.

Lotufo has developed Collaborative Research and Development Agreements with national and international partners, such as restoring navigation in the channel and harbor used by major industries in Brazil with the Foundation for Aquatic Research. He is working to restore navigation in the private harbor in an industrialized area of Sao Paulo.

Lotufo received his bachelor¿s degree in biology and his master¿s in zoology from Louisiana State University. He is a board member of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry, Mid South Chapter.
