ERDC-CRREL Researcher Affleck Earns Master's in Arctic Engineering

Rosa T. Affleck14 Feb 2006 -- HANOVER, N.H. -- Rosa T. Affleck a civil engineer with the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center's (ERDC) Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) has received a master's of science degree in Arctic Engineering.

Affleck, a member of CRREL's technical staff since 1994, has completed the requirements for her master's program at the University of Alaska-Anchorage in Arctic Engineering with an emphasis in frozen soils and soil properties. She received her undergraduate degree in civil engineering from the Cebu Institute of Technology, Cebu City, Philippines.

At CRREL, Affleck's areas of specialization are vehicle mobility and modeling, geotechnical engineering to address cold regions military maneuverability, and the seasonal conditions that affect the performance of pavement structures for roads and airfields.

CRREL is one of seven laboratories that make up the ERDC. The ERDC is the premier research and development facility for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with more than 2,000 employees, $1.2 billion in facilities, and an annual research program of $700 million. It conducts research in both military and civil works mission areas for the Department of Defense and the nation. CRREL is the only Department of Defense laboratory addressing problems and opportunities unique to the world's cold regions. Located in Hanover, N.H., CRREL also has field offices in Fairbanks and Anchorage, Alaska.
