Science

The goal of the DoDEA science program is for all students to achieve scientific literacy by (1) developing a balanced understanding of the concepts of life, chemistry, physics, earth/space, and environmental science (2) having access to a rich and challenging science curriculum, and (3) developing science knowledge and reasoning skills necessary to understand current events and make informed decisions about social and personal issues. Science instruction recognizes the natural wonder that students bring to the classroom and weaves this curiosity into learning experiences.

The DoDEA science content standards outline what students should know, understand and be able to do in science. In an engaging, motivational, hands-on, K-12 program model, students become active problem solvers in preparation for their roles as scientifically literate citizens.

DoDEA science standards are based upon the National Science Education Standards which are subdivided into seven strands which are organized into learning progressions for a vertical perspective:

Science as Inquiry
Science and Technology
Science in Personal and Social Perspectives
History and Nature of Science
Physical Science
Life Science
Earth and Space Science

Students’ understandings and abilities are grounded in the experience of inquiry. For the younger students, many opportunities to manipulate and interact with the environment promote the use of personal experiences to enhance further learning and development. In the process of inquiry, students design, conduct, and communicate investigations, and use technology to assist in data collection and analysis. In this way students learn science concepts, develop reasoning, critical thinking and procedural skills, and construct an understanding of the nature of science as a human activity. From this students can generalize knowledge to new/unique situations.

DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam elementary and middle school science programs are integrated, providing students with developmentally appropriate experiences and knowledge in life, earth, space, and physical science each year. In high school, students may choose from a variety of courses ranging from introductory physics, biology, chemistry, astronomy, and Advanced Placement. A minimum of three credits in science is required for graduation. Standards and course descriptions for each grade level or course are available on the DoDEA web site. Each school’s guidance office will provide a list of science courses offered.

Supplemental programs that engage students in authentic science are also offered in DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam. They include the Junior Science and Humanities Symposium for 8th through 12th grade students.
