NCES 2008347 Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002) Base-Year to Second Follow-up Public Use Data File Documentation
The Data File Documentation reports on the procedures and methodologies employed during the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 base year, first, and second follow-ups, with special emphasis on the second follow-up (2006). The document is designed to provide guidance for users of the restricted-use data as released in Electronic Codebook (ECB) format (NCES 2008346) and also contains information that will be valuable to users of the public-use Data Analysis System (DAS). Included in the documentation are the following: an overview of the study and its predecessor studies; an account of instrumentation and high school records (academic transcript) collection; documentation of the sample design, weighting, imputation, and design effects; a summary of the data collection methodology and results, including detailed response rates; a description of data preparation and processing activities including linkage to ancillary external data sets and creation of composite variables; and an overview of data file structure and contents. Numerous appendices supply a glossary of terms and a synopsis of the field test, and treat of topics such as cross-cohort comparison and occupational coding scheme crosswalks.

NCES 96860REV USER'S MANUAL: Restricted-Use Data Procedures
The Restricted-Use Data Procedures Manual describes the laws, licensing procedures, security procedures and on-site inspections of restricted-use data.

Restricted-use Data Applicants:
As of July 1, 2007, IES/NCES will only accept restricted-use data License applications through its new Electronic Application System. Any License application that does not come through this new system will be returned to the applicant. More information about applying for a License is available in the instructions and in the Restricted-Use Data Procedures Manual.

Technical documentation for the 2004-05 Teacher Follow-Up Survey, done one year after the 2003-04 Schools and Staffing Survey. The documentation covers the entire survey cycle--from sample design, questionnaire revisions, and field data collection through all stages of processing. There are descriptions and explanations of the survey cycle in the main text, supplemented by more detailed information in appendices.

NCES 2007333 2003-04 School Survey on Crime and Safety Public-Use Data File Codebook
The 2003–04 School Survey on Crime and Safety (SSOCS:2004) public-use data file codebook contains a list of variables and information about the variables on the SSOCS:2004 public-use data file. Users are provided with weighted and unweighted frequencies for the categorical variables on the file and descriptive statistics for the continuous variables on the file (i.e. sample size, minimum value, maximum value, mean, standard deviation, and median). Variables are listed in the order in which they appear on the data file.

NCES 2007335 2003-04 School Survey on Crime and Safety Data File User's Manual
This combined public and restricted-use Data File User's Manual contains information about the sample design, data collection, imputation, and weighting procedures for the public and restricted-use data files. Appendixes in this document provide a variable list, SSOCS 2003–04 survey instrument, public-use codebook, and detailed descriptions of imputation procedures and bias analysis. Portions of the manual that require a restricted-use license are included on the restricted-use file CD.

This Data File Documentation reports on the procedures and methodologies employed in the Transcript Component of First Follow-up to the Education Longitudinal Study of 2002 (ELS:2002). The document is designed to provide guidance for users of the transcript data as released in Electronic Codebook (ECB) format (NCES 2006-351). Included in the documentation are the following: an overview of the transcript data collection and other components of ELS:2002, description of the transcript sample and how the transcripts were collected, the methods employed in coding and classifying the transcripts, description of the transcript weights and guidance on their use, non-response bias analysis results; estimates of the complex sample design effects, and an overview of data file structure and contents. In addition, there are a number of appendices that provide detailed technical information about topics including how to make cross-cohort comparisons; descriptions of the student, course, school, and course offerings data files; and the course classification scheme employed.

NCES 2001029E Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Class of 1998-99 (ECLS-K) Base Year Public-Use ECB Errata
This errata identifies errors in the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, Kindergarten Cohort Base Year Public-Use Child data files (child.dat). The document describes corrections to a very few cases pertaining to poverty, urbanicity, nonrespondent status, academic rating scale scores, imputed income flag, parent ID number, and labeling. These corrections have been made to all subsequent ECLS-K data files.

This errata sheet pertains to two errors that affect the following ECLS-K Data Files and ECBs: Base Year Restricted (NCES 2000-097) and Public-Use ECB (NCES 2001-029rev); First Grade Restricted (NCES 2002-127) and Public-Use ECB (NCES 2002-134);Third Grade Restricted (NCES 2003-002) and Public-Use ECB (NCES 2004-002); ECLS-K Longitudinal Kindergarten-First Grade Public-Use ECB (NCES 2002-148); ECLS-K Longitudinal Kindergarten-Third Grade Public-Use ECB (NCES 2004-089); and ECLS-K Longitudinal Kindergarten-Fifth Grade Public-Use Data ECB (NCES 2006-035). The first error relates to errors that occur when using the ECLS-K ECBs; the second error relates to errors in the computation of the child disability composite (P1DISABL, P4DISABL, and P5DISABL).

Included in the manual are the following: an overview of the study and its predecessor studies; an account of instrumentation; a summary of the data collection methodology and results, including detailed response rates; a description of data preparation and processing activities; and an overview data file structure and contents. In addition, there are a number of appendices. The ALS: 2000 provides information pertinent to libraries at 3,527 degree-granting postsecondary educational institutions throughout the 50 states, and the District of Columbia.
