Skagit River flood crest reduced 8 feet

Skagit River flood crest reduced 8 feetContact: Maria Or (206) 764-6896, cell (206) 817-0396 Oct. 23, 2002 SEATTLE - The Army Corps of Engineers skimmed approximately 8 feet off the top of the Skagit River flood crest Tuesday evening. With the cooperation of Puget Sound Energy and Seattle City Light, the Corps was able to negotiate the delicate balancing act of releasing flows at Upper and Lower Baker and Ross dams to keep Skagit Valley mostly dry. Without the water stored at these two dams it is virtually certain that large sections of the Skagit Valley would have been under water," said Marian Valentine, senior water manager at the Corps. Flood water levels are receding in the region and are almost below flood stage level as the Corps' Reservoir Control Center continues to operate the dams. The Reservoir Control Center was activated on 24-hour shifts for most of the week as the National Weather Service continued to issue flood watches and warnings for all Western Washington rivers.
