The Army Corps of Engineers
In 1779, Congress created a separate Corps of Engineers. Army engineers, including several French officers, were instrumental in some of the hard-fought battles of the Revolutionary War including Bunker Hill, Saratoga, and the final victory at Yorktown. At the end of the Revolutionary War, the engineers mustered out of service. In 1802, Congress reestablished a separate Corps of Engineers. The Corps' continuous existence dates from this year. HTRW
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers cleans up sites contaminated with hazardous waste, raidoactive waste, or ordnance; complies with federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations; strives to minimize our use of hazardous materials; and conserves our natural and cultural resources.

Seattle District
The Seattle District Design Center is responsible for technical aspects of environmental studies, investigations, and designs for HTRW site characterization and cleanup. Our district covers sites located in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Montana. We are responsible for program and project management for three program areas: military funded hazardous, toxic, or radiological waste (HTRW) clean-up or prevention; Support for Others (SFO) work specific to the EPA Superfund program, and; Support for Others in both environmental work (ESFO) and traditional facilities work, to include condition assessments, design, rehabilitation and construction; also champion/coordinate the District Outreach program. Project work is executed through implementation of the USACE Business Process, focused on project delivery teams that include the customer, Corps technical and support staff, and as necessary, various consultants and construction or remediation contractors.
