The Corps of Engineers Five Mission Areas

USACE MISSIONS

For more than 200 years, the US Army Corps of Engineers has served our Nation in peace and war.  As the needs and priorities of the Nation have evolved, so have the Corps missions and operations.  Today, the Corps of Engineers five mission areas are:

  1. Water Resources
  2. Environment
  3. Infrastructure
  4. Homeland Security
  5. Military Support During Peace and War (Warfighting)

Information in this site is organized according to the Corps five mission areas.

These mission areas are very broad and therefore difficult to explain in terms that are easily conveyed to children.  It is our hope that the teaching tools, lessons, and graphics assembled in this Seattle-based site will help to convey the importance of science and engineering in meeting today's needs and the uncertain challenges of the future.

The Corps has a variety of other resources for children, parents, and educators at websites maintained by Headquarters and other Districts.  For an overview of these resources, including classroom topics in science and engineering, visit the Corps Headquarters website (http://education.usace.army.mil/classroom/main.html).

PURPOSE

The purpose of this "Educational Toolbox" is to increase knowledge about the Corps' missions and to spark interest in children about the sciences, engineering and other fields.  This site will help you to find age-appropriate educational resources available within Seattle District and Web links to other resources.  Some of these resources can be checked out for use in schools or other educational settings, or you can contact volunteers that are willing to present demonstrations or lessons about a variety of topics.  Our goal is to improve access to these Corps resources and a convenient way for Corps personnel and educators to arrange for their use.   We encourage all users to comment on the content of the site, other resources and ways to make it more useful to children.

Parents Guide for Site

This site is intended to be a safe and fun place where children can learn about the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, specifically the educational tools available within Seattle District and other resources on the Internet. The Internet is a fascinating place for children and an excellent way for the Corps to provide educational resources and some fun for youngsters of any age.  But the Internet can sometimes be a strange and scary place for parents who are unsure how to use the technology, and may be intimidated by some of the jargon and terminology associated with it. The Department of Education has produced an excellent publication called "Parents Guide to the Internet", available by visiting http://www.ed.gov/pubs/parents/internet/ or you can call the Department of Education at 1-800-USA-LEARN. The guidebook includes information on "surfing" the Internet, tips on safe navigation and a list of key sites for parents.  This document is also reproduced in portable document format (PDF) in the More Resources section below.
