Information Technology Division

Student using computer

The DoDDS Pacific Information Technology (IT) Division provides comprehensive technology services and management in support of 23,700 students and 2,500 staff and faculty at 41 schools, three district offices, and the Pacific Area HQ.

IT personnel manage a number of program areas to ensure all of our DoDDS Pacific schools have:

- industry standard, fully interconnected, campus-wide networks
- high-speed, dedicated Internet access to all computers on campus
- student, staff, and faculty email, file storage, and application services

Desktop computer systems in DoDDS Pacific schools incorporate some of the latest technology and provide students, staff, and faculty with a powerful, multimedia platform in support of the educational process. Through the incorporation of our Standard Software Resource kit into all hardware purchases, we are able to provide a consistent suite of software applications for all systems in our schools.

All of the desktop systems provide the students, staff, and faculty with word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, and database software. Additionally, student and teacher computers provide access to specialized software in support of specific curriculum areas.

Computer support personnel in the schools provide support for approximately 14,000 desktop systems. This translates to a student per instructional computer with Internet access of 2.4:1, which far exceeds the national average of 4.8.1 (National Center For Educational Statistics, Internet Access in U.S. Public Schools and Classrooms: 1994-2002

All of our schools employ the latest web content filtering software to ensure our students enjoy a safe and productive web experience, and students use a filtered, monitored email system designed specifically for classroom use. In addition, all of our schools are equipped with a variety of specialized equipment such as digital projectors, CD writers, and color printers to support a host of curriculum needs.

Annual Far East Technology Conferences are held in Tokyo, Japan, and provide training for identified DoDDS elementary, middle and high school teachers, education technologists, and administrative technologists. The first technology-focused professional development was held November 31-December 4, 1999. This ensures our workforce receives just-in-time training in areas that facilitate the infusion of technology into the curriculum.
