Presenter Biographies

TERESA FOULKES is the Assistant Director for the Opportunities in a Professional Education Network (OPEN) Initiative.  She has a bachelor's degree from Southwest Missouri State University in Elementary Education, with an emphasis in Early Childhood Education.  After teaching elementary school, Terri coordinated a career education program for middle and high school students.  She serves on the Board of Directors for the Missouri School Age Community Coalition (MOSAC2). 

DENISE MAUZY is the Program Director for the Opportunities in a Professional Education Network (OPEN) Initiative.   She also serves as the Public Policy Co-Chair for the Association for the Education of Young Children of Missouri (AEYC-MO) and is a member of the Lutheran Family and Children Services Board.   Ms. Mauzy received a Masters in Social Work (MSW) in 1999 and is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker.  

LIZ NUSKEN joined the Ohio Child Care Resource and Referral Association in 2006 to direct Afterschool Initiatives, which includes the Ohio Afterschool Network. Previously she directed a Central Ohio afterschool intermediary program. Her professional experience also includes directing volunteers in health care, youth services and municipal settings; corporate community relations; fundraising and event management for a private educational organization.

LESLIE ROESLER is currently a Community Initiatives Project manager at the Pennsylvania Key. Leslie oversees the statewide community engagement and regional school-age initiatives. She has twenty (20) years of experience providing training and technical assistance to out-of-school time programs. Since 1986, Ms. Roesler has been involved on a local, state and national level to develop criteria for assessing school-age program quality. Leslie was an active member of the task force guiding the development of the Core Body of Knowledge and Professional Development Records in Pennsylvania. Ms. Roesler holds a Masters Degree in Human Services Administration and an undergraduate degree in Human Development (concentration in early childhood development) from Drexel University.

DONNA RUHLAND is Director of Professional Development at the Ohio Child Care Resource and Referral Association and has been working in the field of early childhood education for twenty-five years.  Ms. Ruhland earned her M.Ed. in Early Childhood from Kent State University.  She holds current Pre-K Licensure from the Ohio Department of Education and Early Intervention Specialist Certification from OMR/DD.  Her experience in the early childhood field includes work as a child care center lead teacher, a preschool teacher and as a family child care provider.  Ms. Ruhland has also served as a community trainer for eighteen years and taught as an adjunct for the Early Childhood Department at Sinclair Community College for fourteen years. 

AMANDA SZEKELY is a Senior Program Associate at The Finance Project.  In this capacity, Ms. Szekely conducts research, policy tool development, and technical assistance activities that focus on financing and sustaining initiatives serving children and youth.  Prior to joining The Finance Project, Ms. Szekely served as Assistant Director of the Writers’ Express, an afterschool program in Boston and as a Research Assistant at the Fannie Mae Foundation.  She holds a Masters degree in Public Policy from Georgetown University, with a focus in education, social and family policy.
