Don Slater |
RSVP -- Riley County, KS |
|
Don Slater spends four evenings a week at the Douglass Center in Manhattan, Kan., where the Hand to Hand program offers tutoring and homework help to community children. When school is out for the summer, Hand to Hand, which Slater helped establish in 1996, runs a math and reading program. Slater recruits volunteers, solicits donations, provides security, and adds to the center’s homey atmosphere with his cheery personality. The former school custodian has been serving with the RSVP of Riley County, Kansas, for 10 years. In addition to his service with the Hand to Hand program, he delivers meals to homebound residents and serves on numerous community service committees, including the Racial and Ethnic Harmony Committee and the Martin Luther King Day Committee. Slater recently traveled to Washington, D. C., to accept the “With Our Youth” national award presented by the AARP’s National Retired Teacher Association. His service efforts have earned him several other awards, along with recognition earlier this year from the Kansas State Senate. |
