US/Mexico Comparable Industries Study: identifying potential risks and pollution prevention strategies

United States   Mexico

Received C$ 72380 in 1998

A group of border NGOs will work together to identify toxic chemical use at three maquiladoras and enter into dialogue with the facilities to reduce emissions and implement realistic pollution prevention strategies. This is the second phase of the Comparable Industries Study. In phase one, ten maquiladoras, representing various sizes and industrial sectors were selected. A similar US manufacturing firm was identified for each maquiladora. Typical toxic chemicals used and released were also identified, along with potential health effects and pollution prevention strategies. The selection of the three facilities for phase two is mainly based on their potential risk to the community and workers, as revealed in the phase one study. Short fact sheets will be prepared on each of the ten industries for distribution in the nearby communities, to educate residents and to encourage them to become involved in discussions with the companies.
