Water quality and availability are growing concerns in many parts of the world. This puts into question the current practice of using large quantities of water to transport waste, particularly when the waste can often be put to productive use. In a context where water supplies are limited, infrastructure for drainage and treatment lacking, and risks of contamination of groundwater high, dry toilets represent a very appropriate and low-cost technology. They convert human waste from a source of pollution into a source of fertilizer. Communities in five regions of central and southern Mexico have requested Espacio de Salud's assistance to introduce dry toilets. They are taking advantage of new government programs that provide materials for the construction of dry toilets and the capacity of Espacio de Salud to provide the training that they will need to properly construct and use the technology. If successful, the project may serve as a model for other areas of North America where water is scarce or even areas where water is not yet scarce but where the increasing monetary and environmental costs of maintaining existing infrastructure encourage exploration of alternatives.
