Indigenous communities in the Sierra Madre of Chihuahua collectively own their land and should be able to benefit from local resources, but they lack the capacity to manage their forests in a way that will sustain both resources and people. The focus of this project is community appropriation of knowledge and skills so that the inhabitants of the region can take control of local resources and use them sustainably. This will allow the communities to improve their economic situation and protect the forest ecosystem that affects water quality in seven watersheds, including the Rio Bravo/Rio Grande. Nine communities will receive technical assistance to define their own forest management and forest product marketing strategies. Particular attention will be paid to the legal framework, taking full advantage of the protection for the forest and the environment afforded by Mexican law.
